Now that we’re already into June I thought it’s about time to fill you in on a life update for me (us). I retired, for the third time, at the end of May. For the past three and a half years I’ve been working as the Education Manager for the local historical society (Osceola County Historical Society). It is time for me to move on and my plan, for now, is for this retirement to actually stick.
My first retirement was in May, 2013 when I retired from 30 years of teaching in Colorado. That one lasted for four days. I then went to work for a software company in the Energy sector as their lead trainer and training manager. I did that for four and a half years. That led to my second retirement in December, 2017. It was during this career, as I was preparing to retire from it, that I started Watchmaker’s Pulse, thinking that would be a retirement project. Much of our life has been documented through that so this is only a brief recap.
Darlene and I sold our house in Colorado in May, 2018 and have been living in our motorhome ever since. We traveled for a while, but her medical difficulties (and expenses) built up until traveling was no longer feasible for us. This led to my third career of sorts. I worked a couple of temporary jobs in 2019 which ultimately landed us in Elko, Nevada where I worked at a history museum (the California Trail Interpretive Center) for three years. I loved that job and left it only because we wanted to be closer to our kids, live in a different climate, and have access to closer and better medical care. That led is to Florida where I continued my third career in history education (I was trained as a science teacher).
For now, my plan is to pursue a couple of interests and projects that I’ve had going off and on for several decades.
- Watchmaker’s Pulse – My original intent for this blog page has not changed. I hope to regain the enthusiasm for it that I once had a begin again posting items of interest to me and to the sharing of my faith in God and how it relates to life.
- Books – I’ve published a few things in academic settings including a couple of journal articles and my degree research. If you’re interested, you can download my Master’s thesis from the Colorado School of Mines library page and my Doctoral Dissertation can be found at the Auraria Library associated with the University of Colorado Denver. However, I’ve always had it in my mind that I’d like to publish an actual book for general consumption. Without going into detail about them right now, I have 4 books in various stages of research and completion and I plan to return to these projects and hopefully make some headway on getting them published.
- Fishing – I am not an avid fisherman, but I enjoy the occasional foray into lakeshore fishing. I have yet to catch a fish while in Florida and the last time I tried was in September, 2025. I plan to do a little of that as well.
- Honeydo’s – Part of my desire for retirement, even since the first one, has been to be able to spend more time with Darlene and help her as her life has become more difficult with age and medical issues. She needs me and I need to be here for her. Of course, that also includes a few “honey-do” projects, which I’m fine with!
I appreciate those of you who have followed my writing over the years and I hope to hear from you and that you’ll be hearing more from me very soon! Onward into retirement!
Congratulations again, Steven! You have definitely had an interesting life since you retired from teaching. I’m so proud of all your accomplishments, most importantly, being a caring husband to Darlene and an awesome dad to Sean and Matthew. Much love to you and the family. Wish I could see you in Colorado this summer!
