Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

One of the things I’ve read about in Florida that is in the Orlando area is called the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. Last Memorial Day weekend we were able to go explore it a little bit. Lake Apopka is the fourth largest lake in Florida and has a large conservation area along its North Shore.

The drive itself is a one-way dirt road of approximately eleven miles. Along the route are a number of very nice interpretive signs. Unfortunately with signs like this, the QR codes for the most part no longer work. They all link to the Audubon Society but the linked pages are not longer found there.

It is a popular drive so one should expect bumper to bumper sections along the route.

The types of wildlife that you see is mainly birds – especially many types of water birds. I’m not a bird specialist, nor a particularly gifted photographer. All of these images were taken with my cell phone and many of them from the drivers seat of our vehicle.

There were also several reptiles, specifically turtles and alligators.

Lake Apopka itself could only be seen from near the historic pump station, where we also took a group “selfie.”

This conservation area was opened 10 years ago and is free to be enjoyed by all. I love going to places like this!
